Caraway and friends – Increasing the quantity and quality of caraway, coriander and oil hemp cultivation

Caraway and friends – the project develops the attractiveness of caraway, coriander and oil hemp cultivation in order to increase the area under cultivation in Finland. The area under caraway cultivation is currently around 20,000 hectares, and this could be increased to 30,000 hectares to meet market demand. The area under coriander and oil hemp cultivation could be multiplied on market terms. Solutions that improve yield levels and crop security are needed to increase the attractiveness of cultivation and the area under contract cultivation.

The project utilises grid experiments and field pilots to find best practices for the cultivation of caraway, coriander and oil hemp. The project results are utilised and put into practise through a contract farming chain. The project implementation area is Uusimaa, Kanta-Häme, Päijät-Häme, South Ostrobothnia, Ostrobothnia and Central Ostrobothnia. The target group and beneficiaries of the project are farmers in the implementation regions.

The project measures are:

  • Developing farming methods through piloting
  • Increasing the efficiency of sharing farming expertise
  • Increasing the attractiveness of farming through diverse communication
  • Utilising modern farming technologies to increase yield levels

The project is managed and implemented by Pyhäjärvi Institute and co-implemented by Nylands Svenska Lantbruksällskap. Trans Farm Oy and Caraway Finland are also involved in the implementation of the measures.
